1. EU AI Act GPAI Enforcement Goes Live August 2
The European Commission gains active enforcement and fine powers over general-purpose AI providers tomorrow, including penalties up to 3% of global annual turnover or EUR 15 million. Article 50 chatbot disclosure and deepfake labeling requirements become binding on the same date.
2. EO 14409’s Classified Benchmark Deadline Arrives Today
Today is the 60-day deadline for NSA, CISA, and NIST to finalize the classified framework defining which AI models qualify for 30-day government pre-release review under EO 14409. No public confirmation of delivery has been made, leaving the status of the first government-supervised frontier model review mechanism unclear.
3. California AI Transparency Act (SB 942) Takes Effect August 2
California’s AI Transparency Act requires large generative AI providers to offer AI content detection tools and disclose when content is AI-generated, effective tomorrow. The effective date was deliberately synchronized with the EU AI Act’s GPAI enforcement date.
